Receiving the news that Tiernan's advanced HD technology was selected over its rivals, company President, Dr. James Tiernan said, "We are delighted to have been chosen by a leading US network for this important development in television history. This award has validated the technical superiority of our HDTV and SDTV encoding and decoding systems. Tiernan engineers and specialists have been applying their talents for more than a decade to develop innovative digital technology that provides high performance and system flexibility for both HDTV and SDTV services. Tiernan's THE-1 Modular DTV Encoders and TDR6 Modular Integrated Receiver Decoders will be used for the distribution of 720p HDTV and SDTV programs. The equipment also provides a pathway for future service development through the most advanced 'Plug-and-Play' architecture." Tiernan's THE-1 Modular DTV Encoders process both HDTV and SDTV services. The TDR6 Modular IRD can be configured to support HDTV and SDTV services and can be operated in either satellite or terrestrial networks. The modular design of Tiernan products enables them to be configured in a 'Plug-and-Play' manner to provide the required video, audio and data services. As a result, the initial investment is protected and the cost of meeting future requirements is minimized. Tiernan Communications has also announced that its Encoders and Decoders, supporting both 1080i and 480p, will be ready in time for the scheduled on-air date beginning November 1, 1998.
