I read an article in the Linux Journal about a year ago, at that time they were working on an Alpha port, should be done by now. I have Linux on my machine but have been using NT for the past year or so.

You are welcome to do it - the original source code from Linus Torvald is, I believe, in the public domain.

But, do you know how many Alpha workstations/servers sell each year?

Do you know how many x86 PCS/Servers/Workstations sell each year?

The target market influences the software.
