One time I shaped a hillside for a vineyard for a guy who had been in the Sturmabteilung, the 'Brown Shirts'. He would have been shot with Roehm and the others in '34 if he hadn't been away at the time. He was sent as a private to the Eastern Front, captured just before Stalingrad, and didn't get out of Siberia until '48 or '49. Escaped East Germany to Canada in '51, leaving behind a farm in Sachsen that the Communists had stolen and which the family is looking into recovering. He knew oldtime European methods of forestry, and I learned a lot from him. He was a good guy, though as a product of his place and time he hated Jews almost as much as Emile. I often think of him when going into a bank, he loathed and feared banks and kept a wad of hundred dollar bills in his back pocket. He would stub out a cigarrette in his palm as a show of Teutonic machismo, and tell stories of sawdust soup and one potato a day in Siberia. The war is over, and Emile is a twit for bringing it up. The role of the French collaborationists and the American isolationists is hardly stellar. Who cares anyway. In my veins flows likely the blood of a few supporters of the Inquisition, of 'Native American' warriors, of the Saxon invaders of post-Roman Britain, and we can definitely trace a French Huguenot branch who were secretaries to the less exemplary Tsars of Russia. But who cares. This is an internacional, polyglot forum here at SI. These wires span the planet. Emile is going to have a hard time getting his Deep South Tent Preacher Cross-burning going here.
