Looks like they got most of their growth this quarter from mining their installed base.

I agree -- they spit a great big loogie right into the teeth of a hurricane and... well, you can picture the rest. Or not.

They didn't even get close to tugging on Superman's cape; Siebel watched Vantive's marketing-driven self-destruction with a genuinely puzzled "What the hell are they doing to themselves?" attitude.

Siebel was far to smart to engage Vantive and legitimize their claims, which was the only thing that could have made this strategy work. It also didn't help that Siebel announced theScopus acquisition the day before Chicago DCI, the event at which Vantive rolled out their "attack-Siebel" campaign only to fall on deaf ears.
