Note that Gateway's burst in sales came from their lease program. Dell's own lease program has been active for quite some time and has been a significant portion of their sales increase.

I actually went and checked the historical behaviour of my favorite stocks around earnings time and what I found surprised me. Dell often does not go up before earnings, any faster than it does at other times, especially right before earnings. There are other companies, like Microsoft, which have a much more consistent pre-earnings run-up. So while I also believe Dell is likely to recover quickly from this latest dip, I would not count on it. A big market-wide dip can make bring Dell down even before earnings.
