The above quotes are taken from an article on page A9 of IBD edition of 7/23/98. Key points in the article are: SS7 is the the technology that organizes and routes phone traffic and makes call waiting, call forwarding and called ID possible. SS7 for data is necessary because voice networks are congested because of the overload from data. Data needs to be offload to ease the strain. US West plans to use the technology starting with Seattle. SS7 for data keeps the information in its original form instead of mimicing voice signals. SS7 for data makes more efficient use of modems through the use of modem farms. SS7 for data is useful to both the carriers and ISPs. ISPs will save money with SS7. Ascend is working with HP to provide SS7 to carriers. This could move Ascend 6 to 9 months ahead of its competitors.
