You don't understand. Control the desktop and you will eventually control the server. At least thats the way it can be done with 3 tier architecture. Microsoft developed a component model (COM) on the client so that database front ends could be built quickly with shrinkwrap components that you buy. This created a market for component vendors. COM was then extended so that it worked transparently across networks (DCOM). This was about the time when Sun freaked and realized what Microsoft was trying to do. The market for client side presentation components could now be extended to the middle tier server for business logic and the data tier for data provider components. What COM does is force you to use Windows operating systems across all three tiers. Now Sun is trying to stop this with its own component model called JavaBeans. The trouble is that Sun Javastation hardware in combination with JavaOS and HotJavaViews hasn't got a chance to wrestle the desktop away from Intel PC Windows and Internet Explorer. Of course, islands of unmaintainable and inflexible monolithic operating systems are a dead end for internet service infrastructure. Neither Solaris, Linux, or NT is the long term solution. Sun's real potential is in new software architectures for building internet service infrastructure but they are wasting precious time and resources 'chasing' Microsoft as so many have done before. Lets see if Jini amounts to anything.
