700 more jobs to go? Or had this been announced previously?

I think it will pay off in time. The next generation Origin servers should incorporate technology from Cray. Meanwhile, the new SV1 vector machine looks good, and the T3E continues to sell.

The UK academic community is getting a new T3E-1200E with 576 processors, 148 Gbytes of memory and 2 Tbytes of high performance disk. Very nice indeed. Hopefully it will be in place before I finish my PhD. Full details on epcc.ed.ac.uk - this site will be down until late Sunday evening.

For anyone interested in Cray stuff in general I recommend going to
arsc.edu
This is a Cray newsletter produced by ARSC. This particular issue has some info from the recent Cray User Group meeting.

Jim,

Thanks for the summary of the conference call. I get the sense that Rick knows what he's doing and how to fix the situation, which as a lot more than I could say for McCracken. The last quarter was a little worse, I think, because the attrition was not as high as they expected, hence the 700-person layoff. On the revenue side, the news are pretty good, particularly the server revenue growth. Later in the year, the NT workstations should kick in. Once the expense structure is adjusted correctly, this should be a very nice, profitable company.

BTW, I agree on Cray -- certainly the money could have been better spent elsewhere, but that's water under the bridge.

Well Jim, I guess you got your wish today. One thing we can say about our baby---"SGI knows tanking".
