Why don't they focus on building airplanes?

I agree. Pay them for meeting business objectives like growth and profits, not what he stock price does short-term in response to their charge-offs and "expectations management". Pay them in stock options as long as there's a tax advantage vs. cash, but base it on real business goals not on "the performance of our stock". It's a bit tougher to produce real results than to talk the stock up.
