Pfizer Seeks OK for Viagra in Japan
Friday July 24, 8:41 am Eastern Time

TOKYO (AP) -- Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (NYSE:PFE - news) today applied for permission to sell the popular anti-impotence drug Viagra in Japan, where the little blue pill has already caused a media sensation.

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., the Japanese affiliate of New York-based Pfizer Inc. submitted the application and clinical test results from the United States to Japan's Health Ministry, Kyodo News reported.

Company officials in Tokyo were unavailable for comment.

Viagra's debut has been reported on widely in Japan, especially in the tabloid press. One weekly magazine even printed an article advising Japanese readers how to obtain the drug by mail order.

The pills, available only by prescription in the U.S., have been legally imported to Japan by individuals and then resold by marketers exploiting a ban on selling unapproved drugs wholesale.

A Japanese travel agency has even begun tours to Hawaii for the sole purpose of getting a prescription for Viagra.

In Japan 30-tablet bottles of the drug have been sold for as much as 80,000 yen ($569).

Last week, the health ministry reported Japan's first death of a man who had taken Viagra, and warned against using it without proper instruction.
