Investing is a long term thing. Your're right. It's so easy to let emotion and the fear of losing a "sure thing" derail long term plans. BTW, I paid for my roof repair by cashing in 150 shares of Microsoft stock in 1987. I made $12 per share, which was a "sure thing." My roof overhead now has cost me about $345,000 according to an estimate I saw. I keep the original sales bill in my top desk drawer to remind me of short term thinking.
