Interview on Power Lunch - Not verbatim, but pretty damn close. Infoseek -.04 vs. -.07 revenue up 113% to $17M Advertising sponsors in Infoseek: Bell Atlantic (8%) Toyota Sprint Sony Advertising accounts for 95% of sales. Power Lunch Interviewer: What are you doing to fix the Revenue vs. bottom line results? Motro: Profits will come. The power of a media company along with internet company will grow. Profits will come because of the margins of a software company and high margins of the internet co. "The two combined will drive profits in this industry.' Power lunch Interviewer: Are the losses behind you then? Motro: The acquisition of Starwave will create an amount of goodwill. This goodwill will be amortized against expense over some period. We will see some losses as a result of the goodwill. But plans are for portal to be launched later this year which will combine power of ESPN, ABC News, along with Infoseek, Disney and other properties. You will see rapid growth in terms of revenues and gained market share. Already today, if you just add up the unduplicated reach of these sites, we are #3 on the internet. We are ahead of Excite, Microsoft and we are ahead of Netscape. We are only behind Yahoo and AOL. It's the power of that combination that will drive revenue and bring us to our goal of being #1. Profits will come to our company. Webber (WSJ guy): But Harry, everyone is trying to get in. How can you make the portal site stand out and be different from the rest? Motro: Great question. (NOT) That's the #1 reason for the Disney transaction. No one has the combination of technology skills, the internet know-how, the existing portal, plus the great content sites like ESPN, ABC, ABC News, and Disney. All of this will be part of the portal. You have to look at this industry, the first 50 million people who came on the internet in the first 5 years really flooded on. Their responding to companies like Infoseek. The next 50 million will define the industry. And they'll respond to ESPN and ABC. Nobody has that to offer. Power Lunch Interviewer: How do you tell a good internet stock with no earnings from a bad internet stock with no earnings. (They were getting real technical on our asses!) Motro: The good internet stocks have the raw assets to build into a leading market position. That's what makes Infoseek a good stock. We have the massive branding power of Disney behind us as well. We have a $165 million dollar plus promotional deal. We are going to be one of the major synergy events for Disney. What that means is that Disney will drive the Infoseek properties into the popular culture. That is a key asset for winning. And a good internet stock is a company which will be a leader in the future.
