In September 1997 the software giant invested $45 million in Lernout to bolster its own research in speech technology. Microsoft also took a $3 million stake in the FLV Fund. But it remains unclear how tight these relationships are. Lernout & Hauspie granted Microsoft exclusive access to its technology, but Microsoft is free to use the technology, choose another or make its own.
