Ummm. Anyone want to comment on NE and MDCO's earnings releases? Is this right about NE?

July 23, 1998, Noble Drilling Corp., announced June '98 three-month earnings per share, $0.38 vs $1.21 for same period a year ago. Six-month earnings, $0.73 vs $1.38 for same period a year ago.

Results for 1997 include a gain of $128,500,000 or $0.95 per share from sale of 12 mat-supported jackup rigs.

Results for 1997 exclude charges of $0.04 & $0.05 for the three- and six-month periods from purchase of senior notes

.38 vs. 1.21 for the year ago period is pretty horrible AND that excludes a 128 million one time gain equating to .95/sh! Does this mean they would have LOST 57 CENTS PER SHARE WITHOUT THIS GAIN???? Someone please explain what I am missing here, or is this company losing GOBS of money.
