re Hiring and Lay-Offs,

Steven,

Anecdotal evidence. I drove down to Austin today to see the DELL Career Fair. It was held at the Palmer Auditorium, one of the city's larger convention areas. THERE WAS NO PARKING AVAILABLE! It was unbelievable! About 1145, I talked to a DELL employee who was helping direct the personal traffic inflow. Asked him how many attendees there were.

He replied, "Well, we expected 3,000, so we printed up 5,000 of the blue cards (blue card = point of contact, floor layout by function, and entry into drawing for laptop) and we're already out of them." I can believe it. Another employee said they will probably put the attendance figures on the web site, so look for it.

Met RB Williams there, and both of us just shook our heads. For instance, each function had its own booth, like at a typical career fair, except that they were all DELL. In front of each booth, were several long orderly lines. In front of Marketing, for instance, were three lines, containing 33, 18, and 22 people, respectively. I tried to take pictures, but none of them will do it justice, since I did not have a wide angle lens.

Afterwards RB and I checked out the Driskill and the Omni, a couple of downtown hotels. RB has already done an awful lot of work, and will be a very powerful ally when it comes to dealing with the hotels. If we get any major concessions, it will likely be due to her help. She has already done a lot of initial contact with the Four Seasons, for instance.
