In responce to the Gateway release:

From:Greg Ballard <gballard@3dfx.com>To:"'Joe Richmond'" <jlr63@yahoo.com>Cc:Simone Seydoux <simone@3dfx.com>Subject:Your Message to MeDate:Fri, 24 Jul 1998 09:06:16 -0700

Someone here forwarded your comment to me about the Gateway release.
Although your tone was a little offensive, I thought I would give you my
thoughts on the Gateway release.

I asked my press relations people much the same question you asked me
(although more politely). Gateway issued that press release without ever
telling anyone in our company that they were going to do so. That is
the way that many of the larger OEM's do business, unfortunately. We
are very proud of the relationship with them and we are now trying to
issue a matching release. Of course, now it takes some time to get this
release cleared through their PR department. It is never as easy as it
looks from the outside.

I do care, as do all the people at 3Dfx, about our shareholders. I
think it is a lot easier to sit on the outside of a company and fling
criticism in than it is to maintain investor confidence when your stock
is going down. If you can think of something that we can do that we are
not doing (or can convince us that some things we are not doing we
should be doing) please let me know.

I guess I was a little rude to Mr. Ballard, but I never mentioned the stock price, IMHO if you invest you take the risk.

Gateway has to carry every board out there and every boardmaker except TDFX released a press statement, then Gateway themselfs issued the release about V2, now what company dose Gateway want to be associated with, I thing a joint press release should have been done, don't you all, and I now thing Mr. Ballard might be a pissed as myself, I hope the company will get ahold of the sitituation with these press releases,

Have a good weekend all

JR

[Boxmakers' current strategy for the mainstream]

They are offering a relatively cheap 2D/3D card as a default, plus an optional Voodoo 2 and a gamepack for those who are somewhat interested in 3D gaming. Which may mean that they are not neccessary in a hurry to use Banshee - or its competitors like S3D - as the mainstream default offering. The emphasis for the default option may be on price, rather than performance.

Most recent example: Gateway G-series (Gateway announcement could have contributed to the TDFX drop in the morning) - they are going to use Riva 128Zx and offer a Voodoo 2 gamepack as an option.

Andy Chu from STBI thread wrote: "Notice this is the best-selling G Series, not the Destination series. I confirmed that the Voodoo2 used in G Series is the OEM BlackMagic... STB may soon surpass Diamond on Voodoo sales. Next it will be TNT and Banshee!"
