Well, history doesn't have to and won't repeat in exactly the same way simply because history doesn't repeat at all -- it just rhymes!

I am not the one to claim that I know when a bear-market is going to happen, because truth to tell, nobody knows.

Even though the present generation of investors think so, the Crash of '87 was NOT a bear market! It has been nearly a generation since there was a real bear. And the decline of 1990 was little more than a claw! All this has made investors go complacent, and ultimately it is complacency that leads to bear-markets.

If you wish to do so, you can read the recently published "The Bear Book : Surviving and Profiting in Ferocious Markets" by John Rothchild for a good overview of the subject of bear markets. The section on "bear-proofing" a portfolio is of particular interest.

Dipy.
