Y2K CHALLENGE ----- CALL FOR REFERENCES, DEVELOPMENT OF "FAQ"

Greetings All,

I work in the electric utility industry and obviously have some concerns
about this issue. I have been lurking on the NG for awhile, trying to
get a sense of peoples' opinions and following references to various
sites around the 'net. The group seems to be very polarized though into
the "chicken little" and "pollyanna" camps, making an unbiased opinion
difficult to form or assess.

I think this effort, if many of you choose to participate could have a
real influence on (at least) people's awareness of the problem.

My challenge to the members of the NG is as follows:

Pick and post THREE (no more and no less) URLs that reference the best
arguments (and especially objective data):
(1) For a very serious problem existing;
(2) Against it being a big problem; or
(3) An issue of some concern, but not likely to have a major impact on
society (i.e., a small recession in the US, but no depressions, power
outages, riots, disasters, or other things likely to result in a major
loss of life etc.)

It would be most helpful if each poster could have one of each, thus
forcing even the doomsayers and ostriches (sp??) to take the best truly
objective look that they can.

I will compile the URLs approximately once each week (or as volume
allows) into a master list and repost it as a sort of "consensus" (or at
least newsgroup-wide) FAQ on the subject. I will ask that commentary and
discussion be reserved for email or other threads so it's easier to
compile the list. If you feel that an appropriate URL is too tough to
choose, feel free to make your own case and post it on a web site for
the list to reference, Remember to also include your credentials so that
others can assess your credibility.

Once the list gets going, I was thinking about having a sort of running
"beauty contest" for the top slots in each of the three severity
categories to help prioritize things for newbies. Any thoughts? In any
event, until somethiong like this happens, I will just post the URLs in
the order they are received with no editing (other than to remove ALL
argument, invective, or commentary).

Just so you all know, I have no opinion on the severity of the problem
at this time, am not a vendor of solutions, and not likely to be
purchasing any solutions myself (unless Mac OS 8 or WIndows 95 needs
it). Accordingly, I have no particular "axe to grind" and reall yjust
want to base any recommendations I may make on the BEST information
available.

This project is my own, not sponsored by my employer.
