'Bennett pointed out that the Health Care Financing Administration
(HCFA), which oversees Medicare, initially estimated it had 20 million
lines of software code to analyze and fix, only to discover this year that it
must sift through 49 million lines.

HCFA Administrator Nancy-Ann Min DeParle said the agency learned
about the extra code only after bringing in a consultant. "It has been difficult

Went to the bank today...

Went to the bank today to make a withdrawal (Amazing -- some
of us still use tellers instead of ATM cards on occasion) and
I noted that the withdrawal slip had a handy "19" printed on
it. So, of course, I commented to the teller

Me: Pointing at the "19__" on the slip "So, I guess you'll
be needing some new withdrawal slips."

Teller: Stares blankly then points at the pile of slips
on the table behind me "Oh, we need to put more out?"

Me: Pointing at the "19__" on the slip again "No, no -- The
year 2000. Your slips all have a 19 year start."

Teller: Stares blankly

Me: "It's less than eighteen months, you know. Have y'all
started checking the computers yet?"

Teller: "I don't think so...."

And so I started in on a _very_ basic idea that many computers
are not capable of processing years past 1999, that it would
be a good idea to get new slips sometime in the next 18 months,
got my cash and left.
