Shugart and Seagate Future.

I have never met Al Shugart, but I do know his type from numerous other individuals I have met. He was the innovative spark that started the company. He (as well as others) sheparded the company through many Disk Drive wars and years of competition. Then like thousands of other entrepeneurs, the company and his hand picked heirs, decided they had outgrown the beginnings.

Many times this is the right move. Technologies change; companies grow; people get older, etc. Sometimes it is the worst thing that could be done. Companies then stumble because of the lack of vision and drive. Many never recover to past glories.

It's to early to tell whether this was a monumental mistake, or a move that was right (just executed poorly). I doubt if we ever will know the story behind this.

However, one thing I think about in this is that Al Shugart is not the type to allow this to affect his enjoyment of life. Remember he is still a well respected technology giant. If he wants he probably could have a job tomorrow. Or, he could go surfing with Earnest and start planning for the Presidential campaign in 2000.

Shugart did not cause this last disk drive war. He was part of the management that created some of the inefficiencies that have hampered Seagate. He also has built a lasting legacy in a company well poised for a recovery.

If Al reads this he will already be thinking of his next step. Somehow I think he will enjoy himself much more than the management team left at Seagate will. Al knows how to have fun and enjoy life.
