I picked up Granstream Saga this weekend. Pulling myself away from Quake, I played for a couple hours last night.

The animation sequences are vintage Japanimation... more along the lines of Speed Racer than what I saw in Ghost in the Shell. (Ghost in the Shell's animation sequences were fantastic. State of the art stuff.) I don't mind the absence of faces in Granstream Saga so much in the 3D environment. When the characters speak, 2d renderings of their faces accompany the dialogue boxes which helps.

I am a little disappointed at the movement of the 3d character models. It's pretty stiff. The backgrounds are also pretty weak. The only other PSX RPG I have under my belt is Final Fantasy VII which I played through. The detail of the graphics and gameplay in FF7 is mind-blowing, and so far, GSS doesn't measure up.

The GSS combat system has gotten a lot of positive reviews, and I agree, it is one of the better features of the game so far. I've only fought 4 or 5 opponents so far... and I'm sure it gets more interesting as magic and weapons are acquired and as the opponents get more challenging.

I intend to continue playing and will let you know if my opinion changes.
