You all make a compelling argument about MSFT's OS support strategy/structure. For NT, which will be MSFT's only OS in the near future, MSFT needs to carefully evaluate the competitive situation and customer expectations as they try to replace the UNIX installed base, IMO. As NT will also replace W95/98 installed base, there will be some interesting issues with support (home users, small enterprises, large enterprises.)

It appears that the patches are free because they are unsuported. Support is a major cost in the software business.
