Contrary to popular belief, a large short interest is not a positive indicator for long term stock appreciation. In fact, stocks with large short interests tend (i.e. statistically, not always) to underperform over the next year or so. Of course for those with a shorter time horizon it does indicate the possibility of a short squeeze if and when a small pop occurs (making the pop bigger than it would otherwise be - can you say Cymer in April.?). So anyone with a longer time horizon should be happy to see the decrease in shorts.
