The entire computing universe, minus a few Apple types, is waiting for Merced. By Apple types, I don't just mean Apple or McIntosh bigots, but all the people that have anything to do with computers, but hate the me too-ness of Wintel. There will always be some of these, and there will always be some computer faster than the standard in computing at any time. But the standard will win because things go so much smoother when everyone is on the standard. OS/2 is better than Windows...it's dead. You know the one about which video tape format was better and which won out. CDC, Univac, Honeywell, GE and Burroughs were better than IBM. IBM won about 212 to 0. Merced will win. Period. And oh, BTW, Tom is OTL, as usual.

Gene, Re: Merced vs Alpha21264

The article is a joke, IMO. Trying to predict why
one is going to beat another when both are not
here, very much like the K7 will kill all Intel
offerings. About the 21264, even the Alpha supporters
are not very satisfied with the 575MHz as the original
plan is much higher than that(even for the initial
release). Looks like they are encountering some
little problem in pushing the speed higher.
