Short interest drops a little in July, but not a lot

This is from the AMZN board on Yahoo!

Short Interest Falling as of July 15 big_short_seller Jul 25 1998 7:30PM EDT

Investor's Business Daily (Monday, 7-27-98) reports that the short
interest for Amazon has fallen to 7.3 million (down from 8.7 million in
previous month). This is good news, but we have a long way to go to end
the manipulation (see this-is-a-reply-to link below). Do not short this
stock before you understand the mechanics of the manipulation. We still
need to discourage amateur shorts (sorry), but the tide is turning. The
madness needs to end!

Here's a table that I put together that summarizes the
level of short interest in AMZN. I'm using 11M shares as
the float in the %float calculation. Days to cover is the
Short Interest divided by Average Daily Volume. Keep in
mind that NASDAQ does some double counting when calculating
volume. Price is the AMZN price on the day that the Short Interest
was reported.

I pulled the figures from today's IBD. Their idea of ave. vol. is taken
from the 7/15 timeframe. Note, I think 7/15 is actually the settlement
date, not the trade date which is 3 biz. days earlier, but IBD shows it
as 7/15. I'm using 7/10's price. I show the current 10-day ave.
volume traded as 4.37 mil.
