Around the time when the Merced delay was announced, BT Alex Brown's downgrade of Intel estimated that the Merced delay would cost Intel $10 BILLION in lost revenue in the year 2000 alone. That may or may not be a pessimistic estimate.

In any case, fortunately for Intel that $10 billion hasn't shown up on their balance sheet yet--but eventually you gotta pay the piper.
