India Battles to Overcome PC Market Inhibitors

San Jose, California; April 27, 1998-

The Indian PC market has considerable potential but must first overcome a range of issues that are preventing explosive growth, according to Dataquest.

"Existing PC penetration levels are low in both the public and private sectors, and investment in infrastructure will drive PC acquisition in areas such as transportation, power generation, education, health, and communications," said Bruce McCabe, industry analyst for Dataquest's Personal Computers Asia/Pacific program. "All of these opportunities will be facilitated by the government progressively easing protection on the local IT market by lowering tariffs, taxes, and other trade barriers."

However, the lack of adequate infrastructure and the slow pace of economic change are two key factors repressing growth rates, Mr. McCabe said.

PC growth is not expected to match the dramatic rates seen in China, and peak growth will occur in 2000, with units reaching 1.05 million by 2001, Dataquest projects.

Not only will infrastructure investment unlock the growth potential of both the economy and the information technology sector, but it also represents a key target market. Development in almost any area will increase technology requirements, and PC demand will rise accordingly, Mr. McCabe said. .........
