Prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas, however 15 miles down the road it isn't.
Why is prostitution illegal? That is an easy question. Because the government can't track it and tax it. If they could tax it and regulate it, there is no doubt in my mind if would be perfectly legal.

The same is true for gambling in California. It is illegal unless the government can track it, as in cardrooms or government sponsored lotto. In fact, one of the major income producers for the city of San Jose is the cut they get from the Garden City and Bay 101 cardrooms. This emerged due to corruption and shady figures that were involved with Garden City being too blatant. Well the solution was for the City of San Jose to become like a 1/3 partner. The ratios may have changed today to a larger percentage held by the city now. In the case of the Bicycle Club in the LA area, when the FED's came in an took it over due to the corruption and kickbacks, they said there plans were to resell it through screening. The Feds have found the Bicycle so profitable that they have stalled from selling it as they promised the state that they would. So, currently the state is putting pressure on the FED's to sell the Bicycle but for the obvious reasons they are dragging their feet. It is the standard hypocritical stance that if government isn't involved in gaming then there will be skimming, which granted occurs to some extent, but then why is gaming OK if the state is getting their cut? It is obvious they have their own agendas on it. Currently the Indian reservations are being played against each other by Attorney General Lundgren who is building his regulatory pyramid. They are intimidating the Indians to do away with slots in order to save the table and bingo games. But that is another big lengthy post I'll save for another day....
