<<THe real amazing part of the event Emile is sharing is the change in her life spiritually and then his. THat to me is a miracle whenever lives are changed to become more aware of God and at some point more loving and gentle.>> Hi, Nancy!! I totally agree with your statement here, in the sense that there was some sort of transformation of Emile and his wife. I am simply arguing that there is little known about healing, and that many things can cause what seem to be miracles. Pagans and atheists also have things happen in their lives that they cannot explain on a rational basis. But I suspect it is because we do not really understand everything about how life works which underlies this. Obviously, Emile's wife had reached a point where she could not continue to go on the way she was, and there was some kind of event which changed the course of her illness. I believe that in some illnesses with heavy psychological components, just letting go can release enough stress so that the body can heal itself. But we will never really know, and all of us have different explanations for these changes. As I said before, I too am very happy that Emile's wife got well. However, if a huge myth had not been built up around Jesus' life, Emile and his wife might have had another explanation. My remarks about Josephus were intertwined with my argument that Emile believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible, and in so doing has become a little irrational, even though he is very intelligent. He has missed so much of Biblical history and recent archaeology, and idealized scenes in ancient history, that to me his understanding is lacking balance. What happens when a figure is glorified to this degree is that some people become religious zealots, and attack people with different belief systems, and everything becomes extremely polarized. It is possible to believe in Jesus' teachings without making him into a superhero. I think when figures are idolized without any historical understanding of what really happened, mythologies can become dangerous. There were not thousands of people at Jesus' crucifixion, Mary was not a virgin, but so what? I think it is more peaceful and constructive to try and go back and see what Jesus really said, and the way he really lived, and enjoy his wisdom that way. I know we probably disagree about this issue, however! Are you and your family surviving the hot weather?
