Actually, companies often do not take physicals just after year-end, especially large companies. As most year-ends are December 31st which is right smack in the middle of the holiday season and often represents a big effort to meet yearly targets, many inventory counts happen early in the 4th quarter and the results are rolled forward to year-end.

If a company has a good perpetual system with a good cycle count program, there may not be a need to take a physical at all. If one is done, the reconciliation process (administrative) usually takes much longer than the actual counting.

I've audited many inventories but have no direct knowledge of what Intel does.
