ZAPATA SPLITS IN BID TO BECOME 'NET'S BIG FISH

By LAUREN BARACK

The deals are expected to be finalized in the next few months, said Glazer, who believes that the combination of the sites with Zapata's current online magazines Word and Charged, will propel the company's nascent Internet presence into one of the top 10 portals.

Hardly, believes Patrick Keane, an analyst for Jupiter Communications, a new-media research firm based in New York. "I don't see that happening," he said. "They don't have the resources to push viewers to that area, and I don't see anyone partnering with them."

You are not suspicious when the Vice President, Chief financial officer and a Shareholder of 10% or more filed a 144 to be able to sell 847,000 shares in the month of August or sooner not to mention the other 144 filings and sales.

Investors Should Scrutinize Portal Earnings
(07/24/98; 7:38 p.m. ET)
By Gabrielle Jonas, TechInvestor

Investors approach quarterly earnings of Internet companies with blinders on -- especially those that dabble in portal sites, according to one analyst.

Portal sites, among the hottest Internet stocks, are all-purpose Web pages from which users can get onto the Internet and take advantage of functions such as e-mail, online shopping, and chat groups.

But investors may be eyeing their prospects with too much optimism, partly because these companies are not as forthright as they should be when it comes time to report their quarterly earnings, according to Brian Oakes, an analyst with Lehman Brothers.

In my opinion

Read this article completely then quietly sit for a moment and ask yourself can ZAP execute their plan to become a top portal web site. My answer is no, therefore if these guys are as good at business as you say they are then what they are saying is pure hype.

Portal? What's a Portal?

Dina Bass

Wrong. Not every portal deserves its high stock price. Analyst Henry Blodget of CIBC Oppenheimer believes that putting a portal in your portfolio is a good way to bet on the long-term growth of the Internet. But trying to pick out individual winners is tougher. Like many analysts, Blodget believes there's little need for six or seven Web gateways. That means partnerless portals like Lycos, Excite, and Netscape risk getting squeezed out. "If one of them partners with a Time Warner, suddenly the others are out in the cold. That is where there is risk," says Blodget.

Yahoo insider sales...kind of staggering to say the least. I don't know of many companies where insiders don't exercise options especially if the stock has gone up. They would be a fool not to.
