Ian, *** OT Y2K *** I'm always glad to read strongly held opinions.<g>
Yardeni's usefulness is that he probably scares a few people into action. Myself, I'm not worried because I got supplies for 6 months
in my secret cabin in the mountains. :)

*OT* Y2K Preparedness *OT*

Coincidentally, I found the following on the CNN site right after reading the latest Yardeni panic here:

cnn.com
Stock trades pass first Year 2000 tests

cnn.com
Report: U.S. air traffic computers cleared for 2000

I'm not going to say there isn't a problem, just that Yardeni isn't the only person on the planet who's aware of it.

OT Y2K and Yardeni

In the fall of the year 999, all across Europe, peasants neglected the harvest, and didn't save seed for the following spring. There was no need to do anything but pray and purify yourself, because the world was coming to an end. On New Year's Eve, many villages held a vigil on hilltops, and were greatly surprised when the Second Coming didn't happen at midnight. The following year, a lot of people starved.

The Y2K computer bug seems to be filling the same "The End Is Coming" niche. Our minds still work the same. The same people who used to worry about a Russian invasion (or a Malthusian population crash or 100$/barrel oil) now worry about Y2K. We seem to need something concrete to focus all our vague worries about the future on.

I wonder what we'll be worrying about in the fall of 2999?
