Actually ASND will benefit more from the new ATT+BT alliance than CSCO. Ascend is the leader in the telco market, mainly in WAN switching. Cisco is mostly dominated in the corporate router. Ascend has very strong products including its robust CascadeView network management software (which is much better than Cisco's SV+). On WorldCom's Q2 earning report, it states the U.S. corporate data network or so-called private line revenues rose 41 percent to $536 million due to strong demand for high-speed data services. International revenues jumped 73 percent to $299 million, while Internet revenues climbed 38 percent to $525 million. WorldCom is a big Ascend shop, its rapid growth will add to Ascend's revenues. After MCI merged with WorldCom, you can expect the integrated network will have more Ascend stuff. MCI is currently using Bay's FR on IP (HyperStream) which is not very efficient on BW utilization. I won't be surprised if they migrate some of MCI's legacy FR to Cascade. The state is high, hold long term and you will very pleased your investment on this young star. Bloomberg's tech reporter need to take more networking classes.
