Justa,

I also challenged Andrew on his prediction that UTEK would lag peers, partly because of AZ's comments on DD industry orders during the CC. AZ implied these orders were from the "Big, well known companies." This comment as well as another of his calling the bottom of the current cycle for UTEK was enough to make me sit up straight and widen my eyes a bit. The new technology UTEK is selling to these DD players is called, as I understand it, "pole-trimming" and is supposed to be awesome from the little I know about it. Since UTEK has owned this market with DD technology at approx 80% how can they lag peers.

I a rookie on understanding processes and tech, but I'm sticking my guns on this one.

May the shorts get squeezed soon, D

Justa,

I believe that I might have quoted some Market $ estimates either last November or during 96 from a presentation Art gave to a bunch of NY based Semi Analysts. If I remember correctly, Art expected this market to grow to multiple $B and UTEK's share to exceed $500M. ... but I wouldn't swear to it.

I further believe that PGILD will sell for more than $10M each. I suspect that Art will be able to sell all that they can build / support during 1999 and beyond. I believe the SIA roadmap inclusion is a real coup given UTEK's current status re this tool.

I further believe that the key limiting factor will be UTEK's ability / willingness to support multiple tools in the field. Looking at the V2000 example, Art seems to be more focused on the successful launch of a new tool than just flooding the market with large numbers.

Personally, I think it's an appropriate strategy. It only takes one vociferous pi**ed off customer to destroy one's reputation. I'd rather see UTEK ensure success in the field before ramping up big time. Based upon what the Street did to CYMI for its CIP (continuous improvement program) initiative, I suspect that much of the big money also thinks that companies should just do it right the first time.

FWIW,
Ian.

Justa,

Utek just laid off 40 people 2 weeks ago in California. They also had a layoff in May as well as a workforce reduction at ISI that affected 40% of that company. These people were quietly let go but are nonetheless living through the nightmare of unemployment. I guess they are not enjoying the UTEK bull ride.
