However, this embedded software (firmware) does not have to be upwards or downwards compatible to the next or the last generation. Cost and performance still has a much greater incentive to decide on the next generation hardware. You want a DSP just powerful enough to do the work. There is no need to pay more for a very powerful DSP.

Embedded control system is very different from the x86 world.
