"Frank, ATM has limitations with header space, why not run IP directly over optical level zero, and remove the ATM? You know me,always leaning toward passive optical networking."

Hiram,
You must be a George Gilder fan. He's the king of "dumb networks." I have to pull up some of his quotes concerning stripping ATM off the network that don't make any sense to me. If I'm not mistaken, I believe GG is the one who may have said, "ATM is dead," about 5 years ago. Sure seems like he would say something like that.

Hiram,

As well you should. But I think that you want to leave "some" silicon and germanium in there, eh?

Packet over fiber will follow packet over SONET, which will be followed by Packet over lambda. These will take place initially on very (ultra) high density routes, by the fiber barons, and by a few bleeding edge financial corporates who underwrite them. <g>

I wouldn't even venture to guess when this will become a reality for individual end users.

What you are suggesting is akin to what I was referring to as "packet over lambda" in a previous posting upstream. Interfaces and circuitry to support these designs are not in place yet. Nor are the architectural models to support them. Give it some time...

***Slightly Off Topic***

"TCI is building a DWDM system for ATHM network in Dallas as we speak,if you follow the suppliers you find out the cities (ANTC,HLIT,CHNL)."

For those interested, Channell Commercial (CHNL) is an interesting play on the last mile/bandwidth game. They supply both telcos and cable operators. They should win no matter who wins the technology game. Another way to play the high tech game with a low tech company with strong fundamentals. Just IMHO.
