RESEARCH ALERT - Network Solutions raised

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (Reuters) - Hambrecht & Quist on Monday said it raised its rating on shares of Network Solutions Inc to strong buy from buy.

--Stock is down $20, or 35 percent, from recent highs.

--Future competition is more an illusion than reality at this point. Key technical, political and policy steps
remain namely building consensus among all key Internet stakeholders, forming the proposed non-profit board to oversee the new self-regulating system and electing a chief executive. Along this line,

--Putting future competition in perspective relative to a global market opportunity of over 100 million domain names. ''We believe NSI, the clear market leader with over 2 million names registered, has captured just a fraction (less than 3 percent) of a worldwide opportunity which is on the order of more than 100 million names.

--Second quarter results expected July 30 [ed. I think that's a mistake. I have to call the company, they said July 28] suggest upside potential for the quarter and outlook. ''We believe that NSI is poised to deliver a strong quarter ahead of our projections of $18.1 million in revenue and $0.14 earnings per share. ''The results and momentum of the second quarter could imply significant upside potential to our outlook, which currently calls for revenue and EPS growth of 60 percent, respectively, for 1999/1998.''

--''Our 12-month price target is more than $55 based on our current estimates, which could prove conservative.''
