Crunching research numbers and looking at future projections with limited visibility is fine and dandy, but sometimes the best research for the present comes from the Sunday paper.

I'm starting to see more and more ad space devoted to DVD and DCAM. Here is a brief summary:

COMP USA:

Sony Computer with 5X DVD-ROM drive
Hewlett Packard Computer with 2X DVD CD-ROM drive

Digital cameras by Sony, Hewlett Packard, AGFA and Canon

Circuit City:

Sony computer with DVD optical drive
Compaq computer with 2nd generation DVD-ROM drive

DVD Players from RCA, Zenith, Panasonic and Pioneer with a listing of
15 new releases available on DVD format beginning July 28.

Video cameras with Digital Still Camera Function. An introductory
step to DVCAM. I actually saw the Sony DVCAM advertised by a local
high-end retailer a couple weeks ago. We aren't far from price points
which will allow true DVCAM to take off! 10 Gig Hard Drives will be
the norm, so the storage for digital video is cheap. I look forward to
purchasing DVCAM next year and doing editing on a PC.

Target and Wards:

Even Target and Wards advertised DVD's by Panasonic including 2 free DVD movies with a $50 retail value.

Best Buy:

CTX computer with DVD-ROM drive with TV output

Sony DVD player

Best Buy also advertised the PlayStation core system for $149.

A lot of products appear in these ads due to co-op ad dollars from the
manufacturers. When products make print, it is usually because the manufacturer is committed to volume sales. Just a few months ago I had
trouble finding any references to DVD and didn't even know DVCAM was
close to being a consumer item. By far the majority of computers still
offer CD-ROM and not DVD, but I feel within 2 months over half the
systems advertised will be with DVD. A glance at systems sold over the
net shows that almost everything is currently being sold with DVD. The
"build to suit" guys typically show you what the channel will be
offering in about 2 months.

This is what is being sold RIGHT NOW. Do we know which companies LSI
is providing product for?
