I'm asking you this question because of your past S&L experience but anyone else who feels qualified please jump in.

I keep hearing on the boob tube about increasing and decreasing money supply,M1,M2,M3,MZ etc. I'm not asking about what each one of these measures means although feel free to throw them in too, but how is the money supply controlled other than through the prime rate? The gov doesn't just print tons of money one day and pass it all around, and then stop on the next, so what happens?
