Group Urges Ban of Diabetes Drug

WASHINGTON (AP) - Consumer advocates today urged the government to ban Rezulin, a widely used diabetes drug which could be connected with at least 26 worldwide deaths from liver failure. The call, issued by the consumer group Public Citizen, comes seven months after the drug was recalled in Britain because of its liver risks. The Food and Drug Administration last week upgraded its warning for Rezulin, instructing doctors to test patients' livers for signs of toxicity during the first eight months of using the drug, but Public Citizen insisted that warnings aren't enough.
