RN does not require a server. I have personally used it on a web page without a server. It works similar to QT in that fashion. But a server allows for streaming LIVE content and non linear downloading. If Apple wants to do either of these things then they will have to get some kind of QT server setup also.

On a related note, RealNetworks apparently thought they could make a deal with the devil and not get burned. I hope that Apple has not made any similar type of compromise with regards to QT.
