I heard from someone reliable inside AMAT that there's a 10% (1500) layoff in the cards, could be as soon as next week. I've looked at the press/news releases and I've only found references to voluntary reductions, not actual layoffs. On the other hand, if this turns out to be true, it shouldn't surprise anyone given current conditions.

I'm neither long nor short at this point. I'd consider puts if we see some near-term strength

OT portfolio: sold short AMAT today @ 32, 15% of total equity. Did you notice that I timed my INTC purchase perfectly, it's over half my portfolio, up almost 20 points in the last 2 months, and just broke above resistance? I figure sometime about January 1999, 6 months after INTC bottoms, amat may trough, and I'll switch back into amat.
