Actually, I don't think its a mass phenomenon yet. The LEAP Puts on the DJX are still relatively cheap IMO. Looking at the premiums some of the in-the-money options are commanding, I think the way out-of-the-money puts are cheap. Plus, most people do not like to bet against stocks, some people think it is evil. I think its a way to make money, though I have never outright shorted a stock, only bought lots of puts.
