I'm getting more concerned about this problem. While the
major global corporation I have helped with this will probably be ready, I'm seeing more and more signs of inaction and stupidity.
According to the Gartner Group, who call or visits people in
15,000 companies and government agencies in 87 countries
every 12 weeks:

1. A full 35% of the world's businesses and government agencies
have either no year 2000 activity whatsoever or are only now figuring out the scope of their problem.

2. Another 15% have a fairly good idea of what must be fixed but
are still putting together their budgets, test plans and impact
analysis.

3. And about 25% of the organizations surveyed have completed
one-fifth of the necessary work.

I found this information in the July 13, 1998 issue of
Computerworld. By the way they have articles every issue about
the Y2K problem.

IN THE SAME ISSUE, an article states that a study by
Merrill Lynch investment analysts found that only three of 3,800
companies worldwide are deemed unlikely to have systems ready
for the year 2000.

The Merrill Lynch survey contradicts the Gartner Group research
almost totally. Who is right? From some things I've seen, I think
the Gartner Group is closer to being right.

I have talked to one mid-size corporation and one large state
goverment agency recently and neither one has even started
to research how big a problem they have, much less fix
anything and system test.
