El,
Nice article. Reinforces my thoughts about hardware and service. If the price was still $4,000, the units sold would be way down, and so would profits. PCs need to be a commodity at this point to be successful. They need to almost replace pencil and paper. (I don't think they will completely replace pencil and paper.) That way you have constant turn over in the market place and the product is so useful or desirable people don't think about it. Sort of like cars. Hugos to BMWs. Net PCs to super game and sound systems that might run the home. Small business PCs to Mega corporate systems. All being replaced or upgraded for one reason or another. Commodities because they are so common place in our lives. Shoot! There are four in my home alone. An old DOS based PC, a newer Compaq, a new laptop for the wife, and my business laptop that has a docking station at work. We don't count the laptop stolen from my wife. We have more PCs then cars and we are not even techs, just users. What can I say.
