Well you're certainly closer to the customer than I am. The huge figures I see about costs of application and maintenance don't match the simpler type of computer use I'm familiar with. I suspect a lot of problems could be resolved by not having a floppy disk that can be used to introduce viruses and other undesirable programs. Any stripped down computing device can be web enabled and still have the power to do many programs in itself, or through a server like in the Citrix Systems solution.I understand that Java is interpreted, and this means it will always be slower than properly compiled languages, not to mention bandwidth restriction.Java is in the process of becoming fragmented just like unix, and this will make it much less useful. Furthermore there is a shortage of these programers, and while aplets are plentiful, complex programs are rare. I suspect what will happen is that there will be a wider variety of systems in use than there is now. If your job using a computer involves a few simple choices , you don't need a 400MHz computer.Instead of one fits all, the solutions will fit the problem that needs to be solved. Some of the solutions will be similar to what we have now, some will be Citrix type multiplatform, some will be true thin client, some will be more like Dick Tracey watches or pager sized Interesting times ahead, and I don't count any approach out, but I do have those that I place my bigger bets. Remember that the best technology doesn't always win - there are lots of other factors that decide market sucess. .... good investing
