Hyundai seeks Intel investment in Scotland plant

Jul 28, 1998 - Hyundai Electronics Industries announced July 27 that it was negotiating with Intel for an equity investment by the U.S. microprocessor maker in the Hyundai semiconductor plant in Scotland, which is under construction.

The Korean chip maker late last year suspended construction of the Scottish plant, a project launched in October 1996. That decision came at the height of Korea's foreign exchange crisis.

Hyundai is seeking a US$1 billion investment from Intel, and hopes to resume construction as soon as it succeeds in attracting the investment, according to company officials.

The Scottish plant, which will manufacture 256-megabit DRAM chips, is to be built on a site of 180,000 pyong (about 600,000 square meters) at a total cost of US$1.4 billion.
