France's Alcatel Reports 1st-Half Sales Rose 2.4% On Higher Revenue

Dow Jones Online News, Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at 04:35

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications concern Alcatel SA said
Tuesday its first-half sales rose to 61.54 billion francs ($10.2
billion) from a pro-forma 60.07 billion francs a year earlier as a
result of higher telecom revenue.
Alcatel (ALA) said the second quarter was adversely affected by
completing a telecom digitalization program in Germany and the
nonrecurrence of a strong second quarter in southeast Asia experienced
in 1997. The company said its consolidated sales figures no longer
include engineering unit Cegelec, which it sold earlier this year, or
Alstom SA, which it listed on the stock market in June.
The company posted in the first half of 1997 revenue of 86.83 billion
francs.
Telecom sales rose to 40.88 billion francs from 38.65 billion francs
as increased transmission revenue offset a fall in switching and access
sales. Mobile infrastructure was negatively effected by the Asian
crisis, Alcatel said.
Cables and components revenue rose to 23.7 billion francs from 23.58
billion francs as submarine cables, components and data cables grew.
Pricing pressure in fiber-optic activities remained high. Meanwhile,
orders increased to 64.4 billion francs from 62.2 billion francs a year
ago, the group said.
