who will benefit regarding GTE-Bell Atlantic merger.

I don't know all the dynamics, but I do know GTE has Efficient Networks' ATM/ADSL units in their high-speed trials and NN and Siemens both have contracts with EN. A foot in the door is a foot in the door. The competition right now is Cisco's NetSpeed which has no ATM solutions for ADSL.

Bell Atlantic, as you may know, has been the bastion of CAP (vs. DMT) ADSL and this could be one means of saving face. A side effect of merger, to be sure, but they could let GTE call the shots. GTE's been a vociferous proponent of standards-based DSL from the get-go.

As for the big backbone switches, I imagine Lucent is BA's biggest supplier, though I wouldn't swear my life on it.
