MO and UST in talks?!?!

Bloomberg is reporting that MO is considering a purchase of UST. Our good friend Gary Black was the source of the rumor.

Philip Morris "looked closely" at UST a ferw years ago, and "likely remains interested" in the maker of Copenhagen and Skoal moist snuffs. He cited sources close to Philip Morris, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes.

A Philip Morris spokesman declined to comment. A UST spokesman was uavailable for comment.

Black said New York-based Philip Morris could pay as much as $51 a share for UST before the purchase would hurt its earnings.

He said the purchase would make sense because Philip Morris could cut $125 million in costs from the combined companies and generate new sales of UST's Skoal and Copenhagen brands in overseas markets. UST controls nearly 80 percent of the U.S. market for moist snuff.

interesting. I would like to see it, but think it would draw renewed criticism from Washington. Settle with the states' first, then buy UST, buy back shares and increase the dividend! Choo-choo!
